Star Trek: Discovery
Licensing Style Guide | Creative Asset Collection | Product Vision
Having worked with ViacomCBS on a style guide for the Star Trek Mirror Universe, we were honored to join the crew of the Star Trek: Discovery brand licensing program. The franchise entered new territory with this groundbreaking series, boldly going where no Star Trek had gone before. We strived to bring that same spirit to our design assets.
Composed Designs for Brand Licensing
Inspired by imagery pulled directly from the set or post production, we developed composed designs for brand licensing featuring each of the main characters.
These designs also featured original background renderings and graphic elements such as icons, patterns, and framing devices.
It’s always a challenge to build on an existing property while remaining true to its original form. Incorporating various approaches to art and illustration gave us a number of ways to interpret the storyline.
Still inspired by our work with J.K. Woodward on the Star Trek Mirror Universe style guide, we based one collection on graphic novels.
Each of the main characters was given their own section of the guide. This included a short bio, photography, illustrations, and corresponding design elements.
Working from a library of character art provided in both Photoshop and vector formats, we featured each character in several different poses. The process called for the editing and retouching of images, as well as the creation of duotone versions.
Extending the Artwork
Along with extending the opening sequence art, we developed tutorials providing direction on how to create new designs in each of the image or illustration styles.
And the product vision below demonstrates how these styles can be applied to products ranging from apparel and accessories to home decor and travel gear.
